Celebrating Men's Health Every June

Increasing awareness of men's health issues has been going on for years. Encouraging international as well as national institutions to develop health policies and services that meet the specific needs of men, boys, and their families is the goal.

For this year, the focus is on belly fat. Why belly fat? Because it is the type of fat that is bad for your health and men are more likely to have it.

You may think that belly fat is just, well, fat on your bellies. But it is a big problem because it lurks not just beneath the surface of your skin, but it also goes deep into our bodies and surrounds your vital organs. No matter what your weight is, with a huge amount of belly fat, you increase your risk of:

  • Cardiovascular disease,
  • High blood pressure,
  • Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes,
  • Sleep apnea,
  • Colorectal cancer, and
  • Premature death from any cause

How do you know if you have a not so healthy belly? You need to get those tape measures out! If you have a waist measurement of over 37 inches (94 cm), you have an increased risk of:

  • diabetes
  • heart disease
  • cancer
  • stroke
  • erection problems

If your waist measurement is over 40 inches (102 cm), you are at a very high risk of all these health problems. Note that the measurement is not the same as your trouser size. You must measure around your stomach at the level of your belly button.

Generally, what you need to start doing is to eat well, move more, and watch your booze intake. Yes, you read that right. As much as we want to have more than a bottle or two of our favorite alcoholic beverage, lessening our booze intake will help a lot in keeping the belly fat away.

Getting rid of belly fat is simpler than you might think. With the right plan, it is actually easier to lose belly fat than that stubborn lower-body fat. But why just be active when it regards your health for only a month of each year? Start being healthy for every day of every year!
